The LitiGators

FAQ

Who are The LitiGators?

The UF Undergraduate Mock Trial Team, also known as “The LitiGators”, is a group of undergraduate students and coaches split up into competitive teams of 6-10 competitors. The LitiGators compete under the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), going head-to-head against other universities from all across the United States.

What is Mock Trial?

Mock Trial is a competition in which students simulate a real trial. The trial concerns an official AMTA case that remains the same through the entire academic year.

The case alternates between a civil and a criminal case every year. This year will be a civil case. The case is entirely fictional, taking place in the fictional state of Midlands.

How will Mock Trial be different this year due to COVID-19?

The 2020-21 competitive season will be different from previous years. Nonetheless, we will still have a season! Both The LitiGators and the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) are putting precautions in place to help keep mockers healthy and safe amid COVID-19. While there are still unknowns, here’s what we know so far:

1. Tournaments will be held online.

2. You can join The LitiGators even if you will not be in Gainesville.

3. If team practices are in person, they will follow University of Florida health and safety policies. LitiGators who are not in Gainesville or not comfortable meeting in person will be able to attend practice virtually. This will apply to any in-person practices.

Like any other year, we’ll continue to teach our new members, analyze this year’s case, and prepare for tournaments. While tournaments may not be in-person, we’re looking forward to the new opportunities brought by virtual tournaments!

Do I need Mock Trial experience?

We encourage people from all backgrounds and majors to tryout. Members of The LitiGators account for 14 different majors, ranging from Political Science to Biotechnology. Many people start out with no mock trial experience. We will teach you all the skills you need.

How can I join the LitiGators?

If you decide you’re interested in joining the team, we highly recommend that you attend one of our two info sessions. Our 2020 info sessions will be held on Wednesday, September 9, and Thursday, September 10, at 7pm. Here, we will talk about some mock trial basics, along with important information regarding the tryout process, which will take place September 16-19. You’ll also want to fill out our interest form so you can get email updates whenever we have news!
